My logical interpretation of the movie: The first CT (care taker) possessed or started to possess Jack from the moment he walked into the room and the reason why you see Jack in the photo at the end is because you have been seeing the ghost all along. Jack himself actually looks different but because the way its directed, you (the audience) have the shiny. You are able to see and hear what others cant. This being said, instead of seeing jack who appeared to look complete from the face we see, we see the first CT as jack. Its good to note that Jack may have the Shining as well but may not be in tuned with the powers as good as his son Danny; this further explains why he was so easily possessed by the first CT as maybe the CT was whispering in his ears the whole time. Why jack of all people? most ghost stories/concept/movies base their possession on weak character. The first CT choose to posses jack because he struggles to put money on the take, has trust issues with his wife, and struggles to become a successful writer. Ultimately the only reason why I can see why Stanley Kubrick ended the shinning the way he did was solely due to the fact that the first CT can never die, and if he does, he will take it in a form of the next CT.

This same ambiguity is represented here in the sequel, but also has the guts to explain some aspect of it that still keeps the whole concept in the mist making us ramble in unsureness with a bit of a direction.
The tone, atmosphere resonates with the original, the visuals are haunting and well executed overall, yet there are some aspects of the cinematography that kinda had that B movie vibe to it compared to the Kubrick's wide, rennaissance-like perfection where every image seemed like a painting, an art.
Acting is great, nothing to complain about, probably the girl protagonist was a bit wooden and reacted to really shocking happenings minimally.
The 2/3 is a really powerful buildup to a not so satisfying climax. The last 20 minutes of the movie is more of a nostalgia/fan service where the well built up 2/3 of the film was kinda cheapened, betrayed. It seemed like the closer the creators got to the old, familiar places of the original movie the less sure they were about what they really want to do there, which is unfortunate as this should have been the moment of awesomeness, the answer to this story, but it got dragged down by the direction being out of focus.
Overall it feels mostly a worthy sequel that builds on its predecessor and has many good ways to extend the story further, however some of the places where it really should have been powerful it wasn't unfortunately. Nonetheless it's a good installment that definitely needed to be seen by The Shining fans.

His entire personal journey was accepting his powers and finally saving the girl and destroying the hotel and dying being reunited with his mom and watching over the girl and helping her with her powers. After the bloated dead baby on screen I was sick to my stomach. Then they graphically torture a little boy and I just couldn't handle it. The Shining is one of my top 5 favorite movies so I was so excited. But this didn't even feel like it was the same universe. I ended up leaving before the hour mark I was so sick. I just don't find graphically torturing children entertaining. Ive been saving this movie for until I finished the book but I kid you not there is a passage where Rose tells Danny she has the high ground.

So, tell me this, every time the little pictures of Stanley Kubrick are shown in a corner in this video, I find alarming resemblance between him and Jack Torrence, look-wise. Is there some Nolan-level self-insertion going on here ? Like: Overlook symbolizes the great cinematic world, where we tend to over look many aspects/hints of a film, Jack is the director who brings his family, a group of people completely relying on him, that is 'us' and then leaves us horrified, mystified until we are forced to leave the hotel/movie but its impact leaves us with lingering dreadfulness and curiosity.

I was so pleased to not be displeased by this imaginative, creative and entertaining follow up to 'The Shining.

Instead of rehashing concepts from the original, this tale takes us into familiar territory while yelling a brand new story.
